News has filtered through ths morning of a half a million pound winner on Gala Bingo’s Platinum Jackpot.

The grandmother, who has asked not to be named, has been playing bingo since she was 20. Her win was for more than £578,000 - a sum she plans to share with her sister whom she plays bingo with at her local Gala Savoy Club in Radford Road, Coventry.

“She is over the moon too,” said the winner, “I thought I had just won the National Game, I didn’t know it was the Platinum jackpot. I said to one of the managers that is £28,000 each for me and my sister. He looked at me in surprise and told me how much it actually was and then I went to pieces. He offered me a brandy but I don’t drink so I had a glass of water!”

“I am still very much in shock and my husband and I didn’t sleep at all last night and we still can’t grasp it. But at least the shakes have stopped! It has come completely out of the blue; a once in a lifetime opportunity and we shall use it wisely.  We will look after our two girls and two granddaughters, have a holiday and invest the rest.  My sister, who lives close by and has three children, is planning to pay off her mortgage.”

She completed a full house in 42 numbers, with the £578,861 prize made up of the Platinum Jackpot prize of £508,145; the Sunday National Game prize of £66,640; the Zone prize of £3,076; the Club prize of £880 and the £120 house prize.

Mugged For Bingo Winnings

News No Comments »

Looking through the news this morning a story caught my attention of a mugging of an 86 year old after leaving his local bingo club.

Mr Lees had a lucky night and won £1,000 whilst playing bingo at his local Mecca Bingo Club, however once he left the club he was mugged.

The muggers shoved Mr Lees in the back before pushing him to the ground. They then stole the winnings and left him on the ground.  Mr Lees received hospital treatment for injuries to his face and bruising.

In a statement Mr Lees said ” It wasn’t only my face that has been hurt but I feel as if my pride has too. Whoever did this is just a coward, they attacked me from behind and I’m an old man.”

Speaking about the attack he says “Immediately as I left the bingo hall someone jumped on me from behind I hit my head on the floor. These cowards knew exactly what pocket my money was in as they went straight for it.”

Mr Lees went on to say “Why should I let these cowards bother me? I’ve been playing bingo every Sunday for 20 years; this will not stop me playing bingo.”

Lets hope that the muggers are caught and the incident does not leave Mr Lees unable to carry on with his normal routine.

Mecca Bingo played host to the one of the biggest payouts, where a very lucky player won a bingo prize of £639,000. The woman, who wants to remain anonymous works as a hospital administrator and is married with two children and has three grandchildren.

At the realisation of the enormity of the win, it is claimed that she had asked for a brandy or two for the shock and to let it sink in. Her husband had thought that she had won £639, but was pleasantly surprised on realising his mistake.

The winning lady has been playing bingo at Mecca Bingo since the foundation of the company in 1993 and to date, this is their largest single payout.
